- “Can Catholics believe in the Big Bang theory?”

Yes, absolutely! In fact, the Big Bang Theory was first proposed by a Catholic priest, Fr. Lemaître, of Belgium.

Far from competing with the Catholic beliefs regarding the origins of the universe, the Big Bang Theory actually supports them. How so? Let’s start with the theory itself.

The Big Bang Theory simply states that the universe has not always existed -- it had a beginning, almost 14 billion years ago, in a huge blow-out of immeasurable energy, all from an indescribably dense and incomprehensibly hot subatomic point. This instantaneous expansion from nothing to something fits well with the Catholic belief that God accomplished “creatio ex nihilo” (Latin for “creation from nothing”). What’s more, researchers tell us that the Big Bang’s first moments were astoundingly bright. Recall that the Book of Genesis’s creation account begins with, “Then God said: ‘Let there be light’, and there was light {Gen 1:3} All of this is being increasingly corroborated by scientific evidence.

So how does the Big Bang Theory support the Catholic view of creation. The logical progression can be summarized in what is known as the Kalaam Cosmological Argument. It goes like this:

Anything that has a beginning has a cause.

The universe had a beginning.

Therefore, the universe has a Cause.

And we call that Cause God.
